Elbasan. Albania. 2010. English Translation

Qualcosa ti fa sentire a casa.

Tutto viene forgiato a mano.

Elbasan. Albania. 2010. Traduzione Italiano

Have you ever received a postcard from Albania? i sure haven’t, and i just found out why. Albania simply doesn’t “do” postcards. Postcards are pretty, colorful, and depict enticing landscapes. In Albania the overwhelming hue is grey, and the huge shadow of its Communist past has left ranks of anonymous buildings, and the recent economic upturn has paid little heed to beautifying the place. the landscape itself is disquieting.

Albania is just a “different beautiful” country.

Looking around you, you can see that time has passed more slowly here than it has for others. You can read it in the streets, the people. All across the country the relics of soviet era architecture are falling to pieces, which makes the interesting to explore. There is nothing to take for granted, no holds barred.

At one side of the main street squats a pavilion in a derelict building complex. A deserted clearing onto which looks a large blue metal doorway, slightly ajar. Inside the place is dusty, reeks of steel, black-stained men, stray cats, a fire. You sense something primitive in a manmade cave. This is a “civic steelworks”. They are surface miners. Everything is wrought by hand. Here you don’t hear the incessant clattering of the assembly line. There’s sound of life.

Just outside Elabasan we coast alongside a river that runs through the surrounding countryside, dotted sparsely with the occasional tree, a bridge of boats, stretches of mud, assorted fences, and ragged dogs barking at nothing. We turn right toward a low building that houses a potter’s workshop, where smoke rises from the ground. nearby rises a kiln made of mud and bricks. Inside a darkened room stands the potter’s wheel and assorted pots. Three man and a woman. this is the first time we witness a woman working alongside men, here in Albania.

It’s too dark inside for photos, so i take a couple on the threshold. they are too busy working. Their faces bear the same furrows as those in the ground. She comes out and stares at me, asking for a photo. The kiln crackles, the first batch of pots is ready. They are glad of our visit, and give us a freshly fired pot as a present.

Entebbe (Uganda) – Nord Kivu (Repubblica Democratica del Congo). February 2011. English traslation

I muri d’Africa parlano.

Entebbe (Uganda) – North Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo). February 2011. Traduzione italiano

The wall as an element of communication. A vertical space that becomes a manifesto of ideals. An expression of feelings that can be both personal and public, both popular and individual. Walls that are internal and external. The wall is perhaps the surface where the child paints his first scrawls. Before paper and alongside with words, vertical surfaces have been for a very long time the only place where human beings expressed their stories, their teachings, their art.The walls of Africa talk. Domestic walls, church walls, hospital walls, school walls…they all speak to us through writings, paintings, posters, pictures, sketches, clocks, calendars.

These photographs collect these silent voices, their contrasting and mysterious messages.
